Museum Statement:

Family, Friends, Fun, and Food! This year, the Monmouth Museum’s Annual Holiday Exhibition, Fabulous Food, celebrates the intersection of art and food. In this merry and mouth-watering international juried show, the Main Gallery will be adorned with artists’ two and three-dimensional depictions of food and the festivities surrounding the sharing of a meal. Regardless of country, religion, politics, socio-economic status, race, class, and gender, creating and partaking in traditional meals and social activities during the holidays is a common thread present in all communities.

Throughout art history, humankind has used the portrayal of food to symbolize, comment on and commemorate what is happening in our own lives and the society surrounding us. The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci; Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruit, vegetables, and fish; VanGogh’s glowing scenes of the harvest; Cezanne’s vibrant still life works of fruit; the iconic images of the American holiday meal created by Norman Rockwell; the pop art soup cans of Andy Warhol to the current popular trend of foodstagramming, are all prime examples of the impact of Fabulous Food on our creative culture.

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

The Main Gallery will also feature our popular Winter Wonderland Model Train Display and Christmas Tree decorated by the Friends of the Monmouth Museum.
