FICTION TO FACT” SPACE TOYS & MEMORABILIA COLLECTION
NOW at the MONMOUTH MUSEUM through August, 2010

Space exploration is brought to life in a new display, “FICTION TO FACT” in the Becker Children’s Wing at the Monmouth Museum. Over 100 original Space artifacts from the days of science fiction to the present are on loan from Kaller’s America Gallery (www.SearchofOuterSpace.com).

The collection features toys, games, posters and books, as well as memorabilia from Russia’s and America’s space missions. Vintage Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon spaceship toys and books are displayed with other rocket and robot collectibles. Fictional astronauts include Snoopy, Barbie, G.I. Joe, Donald Duck and a Cabbage Patch Doll. Miss Piggy appears in her space attire as a mission control commander. Leading characters from Star Trek and Star Wars, ET, and Buzz Lightyear are also on view. An 8 foot tall creature that originally appeared in the 1979 movie “ALIEN” is now positioned high on a pedestal to observe visitors to the Becker Children’s Wing.

Selected artifacts in the Kaller collection have previously been exhibited at The Smithsonian Institution, the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and the Franklin Institute Science Museum.

“FICTION TO FACT” is part of the newly updated and enhanced exhibition BLAST OFF! A Space Journey in the Museum’s Becker Children’s Wing. From the discoveries of ancient astronomers to early rocket science and the future of space travel, the history of space science is brought to life through scenic displays in this hands-on, interactive exhibition. New activities have been added with elements that encourage visitors to experiment, imagine, and discover. Explore space science first-hand by touching a meteorite, testing your weight on other planets, shopping for space travel items and crawling through the International Space Station. New outer space murals by local artist Bob Mataranglo add a colorful dimension to the Activity Center.

Visitors to the exhibition begin their tour with a walk through the Hall of Ancient Astronomy. See Galileo’s laboratory and hear him speak about his many revolutionary discoveries. Explore our fascinating Solar System through interactive presentations on the Sun, the Planets and the Milky Way. Experience the wonders of the night sky in a StarLab Planetarium show. Learn about NASA, and how astronauts prepare for space travel, experience a rocket launch, and travel to the Moon’s surface! BLAST OFF! is the perfect space journey for stargazing elementary school students or anyone interested in outer space.

A wide range of educational programs and events are available in conjunction with the exhibition. School group tours are scheduled on weekday mornings. Reservations are required and group rates are available. BLAST OFF! Birthday Parties including a tour and Starlab Planetarium show are available. Museum Space Sleepovers can be booked for groups of 20-30 children and include a full-length movie and a light breakfast in the morning. BlastOff Birthday Party Details
