ARTIST STATEMENT

"I traveled and worked abroad in fascinating places, and, along the way, collected visual imagery that to this day, inspires my art---Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Gabon, Morocco, Jamaica, Solomon Islands, Sao Tome and Principe, and more.

I wanted to share these experiences, by depicting the richness of diverse cultures. In my earlier work, I painted in oil and watercolor. I felt compelled to illustrate moments in time in a literal realistic manner, creating large tableaus of ordinary people engaged in the ordinary routines of daily life, celebrating the dignity of people struggling to survive in poor countries. In time the artistic journey explored deeper contemplations, relying less on the external environment, and more on internal reflections, leading toward abstract expressionism.

The appeal of collage/mixed media is its potential for bold colors, shapes and textures that are fundamental to the intensity of the visual stories I create. The artistic journey explores ways to interpret a complex world, and act as a bridge to the imagination."
