Emily Dickinson wrote poems about her Newfoundland Carlo. Charles Dickens—stories about his pet crow Grip. Ernest Hemingway—letters home about his 23 cats. Illustrator Maira Kalman—odes to her Irish Wheaten Pete. Writing about the animals we love is a time-honored tradition that helps us make sense of our world, our lives and the lives of the animals who touch our souls.
In this workshop, we will learn from master writers and animal-lovers how to create stories and poems that illuminate the special relationship we—as humans—have with our non-human friends.
